First Steps with WordPress, Classic Editor

uncode Template Documentation

Three different editor modes

Classic editor

This is the original WordPress editor featuring standard editor tools. It is as simple to use as a text editor. Just start typing and edit your text with the featured tools or add media bei clicking on the “Add media” button above the text editor.

Backend editor

The «Backend editor» is a mighty tool to build complex web pages with pre-styled building block like elements. It features single building blocks or ready-made «wireframes» layouts to build your page. All elements have responsive style elements, therefore, all you build will work on all screen sizes of different devices. At first it might look a bit complex but once you start using, it gets easier to handle. Use the Backend editor for complex pages with different sections.

Frontend editor

This editor you can use once you have a website and want to change minor thins, like typos or add new text. If you click on it, you will be directed to the actual frontend of your website and can make changes there.

No matter which editor you use, always make sure you save your changes by clicking on the “Update” button!

Add different media in the «Portfolio» menu

We use the Portfolio section to create the media archive. It works similar to the Articles section but we’ll use the articles for news in the future.

Mandatory fields

With every post you add to the Residenza Lab archive you will have to fill in the following fields:

  • Title
  • Body
  • Media (only needed in foto and video posts)
  • Category
  • Featured image

For every post you should have at least some text as well as a featured image respresenting your work ready. You can also just open an existing post of the category you want to create to check how it was being made.

Text post

To add your reportage, essay or poetry that are mainly text based, you can use the classic editor. Just click on «Portfolio -> Add New Portfolio» to start a new entry. Give it a title (which you can change later) and start your typing your text. In the right sidebar check the category “Testo” and upload a featured image («Immagine in evienza» which is being used for the archive overview. If you don’t have an image ready, choose the placeholder image for text posts which you’ll find in the media library. – Save everything by clicking the publish («Pubblica») button on the top right or save your post as a draft («Salva anteprima»). Even though WordPress makes auto saves, you should manually save your work after each step by clicking on the update («Aggiorna») button. Once a post is «published» it can be viewed on the website.

Audio post

Audio post work very similar to text posts. Before you create a new audio post you will have to upload your audio file to the Residenza Lab’s Soundcloud platform. Copy the sharing link and paste it into the body of your Portfolio post. WordPress will then automatically create an embed tag and show your sound file in the Soundcloud player. Just add text, check the category «Audio», upload your featured image and save your post by clicking on «Salva anteprima», «Pubblica» or «Aggiorna».

Video Post

Same thing as for the Text and Audio post. Just upload your video to the Residenza Lab’s Vimeo account and copy the share link into your Portfolio post. Alternatively you could use the «Backend editor» for video posts. The advantage of the backend editor is in the optimized responsive integration for videos on this website, meaning that on mobile phones your post will look better. However, this is not very relevant for the moment, you can try it out if your’re interested, otherwise just leave it to the designer.

Foto & Illustration Post

The first steps are the same like in the Text post. To add your fotos or illustrations you can use the «Media» tab below the main editor tab to add your media to the post. Upload your fotos or illustrations and change the order afterwards. By using this method, the images will not be shown in the main backend editor but only in the frontend through a pre-configured component. In the post the images will be show first, title and text afterwards. Alternatively you can just use the text editor and place your images by uding the «Add media» («Aggiungi media») and built in gallery function. There are many other ways, e.g. using the Backend editor or the Galleries feature of the template if you want to create a custom page.

Have fun!
