The third meeting was a Sunday afternoon walk, starting from Piazza Perticari in San Costanzo and arriving on foot at the hamlet of Stacciola. The plan was to return at night, in the dark.

The agronomist Angela Sanchioni led the group, which consisted of about twenty-five people. During the walk, many conversations emerged: plants do not need humans, but insects, fungi, bacteria, air, light, water, and—perhaps most importantly—peace.

By respecting their independence and their way of being in the world, can we begin to observe their social intelligence?

During the walk, we observed how agriculture influences the growth of wild herbs and how their distribution varies depending on the wind or the soil’s consistency.

The local association—Stacciola Viva—cooked pasta and beans for us, a typical dish of the area. The ingredients were provided by the Coal supermarket and the wine by the Bruscia winery, both from San Costanzo.

On the way back, it was night. We turned off the flashlights and walked in silence. We stopped several times. Nik Fischer, one of the artists in the group, invited the participants to listen and imagine.

Do plants sleep?

For the project, this meeting represented the opportunity to get to know each other while walking and to open new dialogues between the working group and the community.
